The 40 over 40 project-Dorothy, age 76.
Over the course of the next couple of years I am photographing amazing people in their 40's, 50's, 60's and above, for a one of a kind empowering experience, celebrating their lives and stories.
It's time to start a conversation about the beauty of aging. We need to change the way the world and media define it, and to embrace the freedom and confidence of finally being comfortable in your own skin.
Thank you SO much to Dorothy for sharing her words and experiences around being a 40+ person in an increasingly younger world, and for sharing her experience in being photographed by me!

Tell me a little about yourself! Life, family, work, hobbies!
I am 76 and from being excruciatingly shy when I was young, I am now up for trying almost any opportunity to experience something new. I love my family, husband John, son Gareth, daughter Helen and I have two delightful grandchildren. I enjoy animals and have a rescue cat called Darla who rules the roost - as cats do. I have worked in different settings. Secretarial, office management, teaching and social work from which I retired many years ago. My main interest outside of home is singing in choirs. I am currently in three choirs, all of which are non-audition, my favourite one is possibly (hard decision), a women's choir called Decibelles. We range in age from 40 to who knows? I love it that this group looks very traditional in elegant black and sequins and then we hit the audience with Britney Spears' 'Toxic'. I love seeing the surprise on the faces of the audience. At home I love reading, embroidery, art/craft and Radio 4.
What made you decide to apply for my 40 over 40 project?
I am uncomfortable being photographed and thought I would challenge myself. Additionally my daughter, Helen, and I were sharing the session so we wanted to enjoy a day together. I still cannot believe what a brilliant day we had with the make-up artist, Donna and furry friends.
Why do you think the 40 over 40 project is important?
The older women become the more society appears to dismiss them, at least that is my view. Youth is all. Employers seem to want young people rather than experienced people. Fashion is fast and aimed at the young. I ask myself if this is a jaundiced view because I am an older woman but I feel it is not because the evidence is before me especially in the media. This project shows a very different view of older women - beautiful , wrinkles and all in my case, adventurous and brave.
How has your relationship with your body/self image changed as you've aged?
In the past I worried about my teeth, my shape, wearing spectacles, but then I realised that actually I was quite shapely and had a lovely smile so I was fine pre the session but nevertheless, my self-image has gone up several notches since the shoot and seeing the excellent photographs which are true to my real self.
What advice would you give a younger you?
Feel the fear and do it anyway.
How did you find the experience as a whole?
The shoot was brilliant from beginning to end. Discussing the procedure and meeting Donna in advance was a good experience because the information provided settled anxieties. The warm welcome and care and encouragement on the day boosted my confidence and the skill with which Donna directed and placed me helped me to relax and be my true self. Seeing Donna in person before the shoot was a very positive approach as I was able to ask many questions as they arose through conversation. This way of doing things suited me well. Everything was spot on on the day. The experience and Donna's care and skill made me feel I would enjoy a future session even more. I was extremely pleased with hair and makeup. (Dorothy’s makeup was done by the talented Teigan Russell Makeup). Teigan really listened to what I preferred but equally was willing to offer ideas - like individual lashes - bring them on any time, they were wonderful. She paid attention to my needs re allergies and sensitivity but still managed to get me the glamourous lashes. She was also generous in answering questions and sharing information which I appreciated.
How did you feel when you saw your finished images?
I was absolutely delighted. Wow. I could not stop smiling and ooo-ing. The prints are also excellent quality.
